A product film that never stood in front of a camera

A digital stylus has to explain its advantages in a few seconds. The product is small, glossy and full of detail, in photos barely bigger than a pen.

01 · Brief

What had to be solved

Formcase needed a product film for web and trade shows that makes the technical detail of the stylus visible. At that focal distance a live shoot would have been expensive and inflexible, the source material was the CAD data.

02 · Approach

How I approached it

Full production in Blender, from scene build to master. What decides it isn't the camera move but the light: reflection edges define a product's form, and only credible materials separate a render from a product film.

03 · Execution

What actually happened

  • Scene build and shading in Blender: metal, plastic and glass clearly differentiated
  • Lighting as in a photo studio · edges and falloff tell the form
  • Dynamic camera moves that make the product legible instead of merely orbiting it
  • Feature callouts as motion design, timed exactly to the movement
  • Render, comp, fine cut and sound design through to master

04 · Why it matters

What counts about it

CAD data becomes a film you can sell with · no prototype, no photo studio, and re-exportable in any language and any format. For manufacturers that's the difference between one video per product and a video library.
